1. In the vCenter server at the primary site right-click the ESX cluster and select Edit Settings. Click
Swapfile Location and choose the option “Store the swapfile in the datastore specified by the host.”
Click OK.
2. In the vCenter configuration tab for each ESX host, click the Virtual Machine Swapfile Location link.
3. Click the Edit link and select a shared datastore for this cluster that is located in the primary site.
4. At the DR site configure the ESX clusters and hosts in the same manner, this time selecting a shared
datastore for swapfiles that is located in the DR site.
As virtual machines are recovered by SRM at the DR site, the swapfiles will be created in the selected
datastore. There is no need for the transient vmswap file data to be replicated to the DR site.
CONFIGURING THE VSWAP FILE LOCATION IN ESX 3.0.2
The vswap file location can be specified in ESX 3.0.2 virtual machines by configuring options in the vmx
configuration files.
1. Properly shut down the virtual machine to be modified and make a backup copy of its vmx file.
2. Edit the vmx file making the following changes.
a. sched.swap.dir = "/vmfs/volumes/vmware_swap"
Set the sched.swap.dir value to the location of the shared swapfile datastore at the DR site.
Note: Setting the swapfile location explicitly in the vmx file requires that the swapfile datastore at
the DR site have the exact same name as the swapfile datastore specified in the vmx file.
Otherwise, when the virtual machine is recovered by SRM at the DR site, it will not be able to
locate the datastore and will not power on.
b. sched.swap.derivedName = "/vmfs/volumes/47f4bec7-ad4ad36e-b80a-001a64115cba/Linux-VM1-
f18ee835.vswp"
