Youcancreatealinkedcloneorafullcloneofatemplatetotakeadvantageofsoftware
alreadyinstalledonthattemplate.
Alinked‐cloneoperationgeneratesa“quick”copybycreatingadeltadiskinsteadof
copyinganentirevirtualharddisk.Thisoperationaddressesvirtualmachine
proliferationby
using“referentialprovisioning,”aprocessthatinvolvesstoringnew
changesbutreferringbacktoachainofdeltadisks.Foreachclone,Stage Manager
freezestheoriginaldeltadiskandcreatesanewone.
Afull‐cloneoperationcopiesallofthedeltadisksandthemasterdisk.Theoriginal
templatecontinues
toexist.Unlikelinkedcloning,fullcloningcreatesanewtemplate
thatisaconsolidatedversionoftheoriginalwithnodependenciesonabasedisk.The
newtemplatebecomesitsownbasedisk.
Typically,youdonotcreatefullclonesexceptundertheseconditions:
Todismantlethestorageandmovethetemplatetoadifferentserver
Tomaximizeperformanceforvirtualmachines(forexample,forcertain
production‐levelvirtualmachines)
